I have come up with yet another version of Dum Maro Dum... This time on Harmonica (Larry Adler Professional 12) Key Of 'C'. I have done recording and mixig at home.
I am dedicating this song to Mr. V S Shirali from Mumbai whose Harmonica inspired me to play this song. I had watched him playing this song on harmonica at his residence in Mumbai.
Dum Maro Dum (Hindi:दम मारो दम, "Puff, take a puff!") is an Indian Hindi song from the 1971 Bollywood film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. It was sung by Asha Bhosle along with Usha Iyer and chorus. The song was picturized on Zeenat Aman. It was written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Rahul Dev Burman. It has been remixed and sampled by many other artists.
The song was a hit in the 1970s, and gained cult status in India.
Two stanzas of the song appear in the movie (Duniya ne and Chahe jiyenge). The song was sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Iyer, (now Uthup). The sound aa..aa..aa.. at the end of each stanza is that of Usha Iyer. Along with the chorus, she also chants Hare Krishna Hare Rama. The parts of the song sung and spoken in English are also sung by Usha Iyer.
The song presented the lyricist Anand Bakshi as a versatile lyricist and shaped his career. It also boosted the composer Rahul Dev Burman's career. Bhupinder played the guitar for the song.
The song topped the Binaca Geetmala annual list 1972 charts. In Binaca Geetmala, a song could appear for a maximum of 18 weeks, after which it was called a Sartaj Geet. On March 15, 1972, Dum Maro Dum became a Sartaj Geet while it was at #1 payddan (position). It had remained at #1 position for 12 weeks.
Daniel Shiman, a reviewer wrote about the song, "It's a montage of creaking synthesizers, psychedelic guitars, and, of course, vocals nailed by Asha Bhosle in an ear-piercing exposition of sound." Kishore Kumar once said that the song is powerful enough to bring a dead person to life.
The song was picturized in Kathmandu. It shows Janice (Zeenat Aman) in her hippie attire, smoking drugs and swaying under the effect of drugs while hypnotically crooning the "Dum Maro Dum", encouraging one to 'take another toke'. She dances with a look of ecstasy on her face.
Later in the movie, Dev Anand replies to the song by singing Ram Ka Naam Badnaam Na Karo ("Do not desecrate the name of Rama"), sung by Kishore Kumar.
The song has been remixed and sampled by a number of artists. It has also been included in many compilations. It is said that Dev Anand did not include the complete version of Dum Maro Dum in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, as he was worried the song would overshadow the film.
Usha Uthup (who sang the song "I Love You" with Asha Bhosle in Hare Rama Hare Krishna) has performed the song many times. British DJ, San-j Sanj has used the infectious guitar hook and created a dance track featuring Natty A called "So Real So Right". DJ Ritu and Bally Sagoo compiled the song for their collection The Rough Guide to Bollywood in 2002. In 2004, the hip-hop artist Method Man sampled the song in his third album Tical 0: The Prequel (What's Happenin').
The song was featured in the Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories soundtrack. It was also featured in the 2003 Bollywood movie Boom, where Zeenat Aman once again sings and dances to Dum Maro Dum. The song was re-recorded for the album You've Stolen My Heart (August 2005) by Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhosle. The album was a tribute to Rahul Dev Burman.
Dum Maro Dum has been covered by Soul Funk Band Botown on the album 'The Soul of Bollywood'. Like the original, Botown's version was recorded completely live. It builds on the originals psychadelic soul leanings with a hypnotic laid back groove.
The song has recently been covered by Indian film enthusiasts "The Knockouts", from Luton, England, on their 4-track EP, The Remarkable Sounds of India. The Knockouts, who usually record lo-fi garage punk/surf instrumentals, have for this release only engaged the services of fellow Asha fan, Mick Sheridan, who has lived for several years in India.
The iconic song has also been remixed as an Item Song and picturized on Deepika Padukone in the upcoming Hindi film Dum Maaro Dum.

Dear Friends, I have come up with one of the best songs of Kishore Kumar of his time. The song is "Ghoonghroo Ki Tarah Bajta..." from film "Chor Machayae Shor", casting Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz Played by me on HOHNER 270 harmonica in the scale of 'C'
As the song is played, I will also show you few rare photographs of Shashi Kapoor, Mumtaz and Kishore Kumar. Thanks for watching the song patiently. If you like my rendering and want to leave a comment please do it so at my youtube site. I have myself done recording and mixing at home.
If you like to get notations of this song please send me a mail at avinesh.singh@gmail.com or call me up at 09701700069
In case you want to know more about this rendering please read below. I am eager to share it with you.
Why\ How did I select this song ? In my car, I was listening a CD of live show of Kishore Kumar Ji in which he was presented a golden record in UK. The song was Ghoongroo Kee Tarah... I decided to try out this song by myself. I checked out if anyone has already played this on Harmonica. Searched youtube but no results. This was interesting. Since long I was thinking that I should take out my own notation of a song and play it on Harmonica. I thought... I got an interesting song and wanted to immediately start with it.... Here we go... Took out my Yamaha keyboard and tried out the song. Was glad to know that the scale was "C". And the mapping of keyboard notes to Harmonica was also good, where ever I thought buttons should be used for the trills, they were coming and in few places I had reversed my blow and used buttons. It was a perfect choice.
Was extremely happy.... Practiced and demonstrated to my father, mother and hubby. The feedback was good.... :-)
About mixing.... This time it was not difficult because I had to mix and balance only two tracks the Harmonica track that I recorded and the karoke track(I purchased a karoke CD). Used Cubase software to record and mix.
The important thing here is that, I got a very good balance when I mixed this song and I utilized this knowledge to again balance and mix the Main Kahin Kavi Na.. song. Which is not better than the uploaded version in youtube. You can find the link of that song in this site itself (harmonicabyavinesh.blogspot).
Once again, thanks for watching the song patiently. If you like my rendering and want to leave a comment please do it in my blogspot site or in my youtube site.

Hi, This time I have played a songa "Main Kahin Kavi Naa Ban Jaaon" from the film "Pyar Hi Pyar" on Harmonica. The song was originally sung by Mohd. Rafi Ji. I have to say a lot about this rendering. Kindly read through.
This will be one of my favorite uploads. Why???? Because, this is not only playing Harmonica but it s a complete practical application of knowledge of music which I have gained. In addition to playing the song, I have also composed the track myself using Virtual Instruments in Cubase. This is an experiment which I did. If you would like to understand it further please go through the below paragraphs. I know it is time consuming but by doing so you will definitely be able to understand me better and my interest in music.
Song Selection: As you would remember, I visited Mr V S Shirali's residence this year. He played couple of good songs for me, and this was one of them. I am not sure, whether I will be able to justify my commitment for the time he had spent with me but I am definitely going to give it a try. I know that I have to improve in each upload. Yes, I have promised Mr. Shirali, I have promised myself and I have also promised my HaloH group members. I am summarizing my meeting with Mr Shirali in a sentence: "A Single Conversation With A Wise Man is Better Than 10 Years Of Study"
What matters is our understanding (Theory and Practicals) of Music Although this was already played on Harmonica by Mr Shirali, I promise you that I have definitely done something\little more in addition to copying, that you would like it. In my opinion, what matters is how much we do on top of just copying someone note to note. And what is our understanding of music. Do we understand what we play?
Is the understanding music is essential: Incidentally, I came in contact with a Telugu film music director Mr Ashirwad to learn Music fundamentals. I really admire his skills in the understanding of music. He is one of the most respected music directors in Andhra Pradesh. I decided to learn music from him. Learning music from him gave me a very good direction. I could know about different types of instruments and about melody, harmony and rhythm. Also it gave me the understanding of the position of Harmonica in the whole orchestra setup.
You may not know that earlier I was very much interested in playing guitar chords, I used to play Spanish guitar and used to sing along. Somehow I could not continue that but the so called chord 'VIBRATIONS' were always in my mind.
Mr. Ashirwad also trained me in Keyboard and gave me a good understanding of chord theory and its implementation. To implement the music theory in practice, he taught me Cubase, which covered understanding of different types of instruments, orchestra setup, recording, use of Vitual Instruments mixing tracks etc.
Main Kanhee Kavi Naa Karoke Track: I thought that to prepare a track for this song will be the best thing to implement whatever I have learnt in music till now. This will definitely test my mixing skills of a number of orchestral tracks, tuning of Tabla to a particular scale, implementation of chord knowledge, base guitar, swara mandal etc. I utilized all the above and you can see the domination of the guitar chords and base guitar in the track that I have uploaded. I have intentionally dominated the karaoke by guitar chords. Hope the audience and music lovers will like my work.
Did You Like My Work? Ha ha ha haha h, the most important thing about an upload. If you like my work and want to talk to me, please do not hesitate to give me a call on my mobile : +91 970170009. Or to leave a lovely comment at my site http://youtube.com/user/Avineshutube
But what if you do not like this and want to provide your creative comments on where I should be improving, please feel free to call me up and give your guidance. I will be thankful to you for sure.
Demonstration of the work to HaloH members: Beyond Playing Harmonica: I was very much excited to demonstrate my work to the HaloH members. Early this month I invited all my HaloH member at my home on Sunday morning and gave a demo and explanation of what I did. I would. I am thankful to all the members Mr Vinayak Ji, Mr Mahender Gala Ji, Ravi Bhai, Ramana, Soni Ji and others who accepted my invitation and saw my demonstration. I would always be inclined to share my knowledge with all others who are interested.
Exceptions: There are some pumps (chords) coming out of my harmonica while I played, I could have avoided them but, I kept them because they came out of the mood in which I played. There are also deviations in the notes, which are intentional and were added to beautify the tune, although I know that technically they can be wrong (note to note funda).
Thanks for watching and patiently reading the above. Best Regards, Avinesh Singh
On the eve of this new year, I have selected a very melodious song from film Sharmilee - Megha Chhaye Adhee Raat. Played on HOHNER 270 Larry Adler, key of C. Thanks for your time for watching this this video. Hope you will definitely enjoy. All the creative feedbacks are welcomed.

Friends, Let me narrate something about Arabian Nights Belly Dance Misirlou Indian Version tune played by me on Harmonica.
The upload of Arabian Nights Belly Dance Part I gave me a lot of confidence in terms of handling the slider in a Charomatic Harmonica. Also, some maturity on handling my breathing. I got a good response from viewers and listener and my own club members.
Thanks for watching.
This gave me a motivation and confidence to attempt another version of Arabian Nights Belly Dance originally played by Mr. Ashok Bhandari Ji. That tune is a real challange for any Harmonica player. A lot of things came in my mind before I decided to attempt this tune. Can I do it? Yes I can, said my heart. Will it be liked by the audiance? No correct answer for this....
People also used to say that couple of other guys attempted to play this but were no where near what Mr. Ashok Ji played. I also saw a Bengali player attempting this tune on stage. He used Hohner 270.... Many things came into my mind but finally I was determined to play this using Hohner 280 C.
Why 280 C ?, because it can respond to more air pressure and may be suitable for Arabic kind of tune. Hohner 270's reads will go out of tune if we use the same air pressure to blow. (This is my opinion, you may differ from this).
What about the Karoke track???? This was the biggest fun... I asked Mr. Ashok Bhandari Ji to give me the karoke if he had. But he did not have this karoke track with him. This was a dead lock for me. Even though I could have prepared the tune, I would not be able to upload because fo unavailability of karoke.
To come out of this loop I had decided to create the karoke track myself. As per my music teacher, I should have atleast given rhythm, base guitar and guitar chords in the track. But as I did not have a good control on Keyboard and correct concept of application of chord. I decided to create only the rhythm. And I was successful in creating that using Cubase.
Believe me, this was a very tough challange but I worked hard to my best and did it, hurrrrrrrrayyyyy .... :-)
And Now enoy the music. In case you want to learn this and want notations. You can contact me on my gmail avinesh.singh@gmail.com
Dear Friends, This time I have selected a tune "Arabian Nights Belly Dance" to play on harmonica.
Why did I select this tune: I was mesmerized by the way Mr. Ashok Bhandari Ji has played this tune. I just dreamt of copying this tune on HOHNER 280C. At the first look the tune appeared to be un-manageable but after a couple of tries I could believe that I can really do this. I am still not sure, from where Ashok Ji had taken this tune.
Who gave me the track: I had requested Mr Ashok Bhandari Ji to provide me the track for this music, but when he searched his database, he could not find that. This was a shok for me because I needed its track to play the music. But I would always thank him for this because that prompted me to learn how to create tracks (karoke) and to think beyond harmonica. I will describe this in my forthcoming blogs.
And when I started practicing this I could understand that this was really give me exposure to the Arabic style of music and its rendering using Harmonica.
I would always thank Keyur Ji for giving me all the tips for Audio & Video editing. I dedicate this video to all the music\harmonica lovers. I am also thankful to all of my club members (Harmonica Lovers Of Hyderabd) and my well wishers for giving me support and encouragement. I also thank Mr. Ashok Bhandar Ji whose talent inspired me to take up this lovely exercise.
Hope you all would like it. Thanks for watching. Best Regards, Avinesh Singh
Hi Friends, This is my second upload with background music.... Although this song is relatively difficult I have tried it hard and dedicating it to MY HARMONICA LOVERS OF HYDERABAD. The song is Aaa Jaa Rae Pardesi from film Madhumati. I am really inspired by the way Ashok Bhandari Ji has played it. My sincere thanks to Ashok Bhandari ji who has provided me the original Karoke track which he had recorded for the same song when he played it himself innHarmonica. Hope you all would like it.
